A Two Minute Read From Greentop Staff Team

This year is Greentop’s 25th anniversary and we’re delighted to kick off our celebrations with our Greentop 25 Challenge.  A 12-hour, non-stop covid -secure Circusathon on Sunday 9th May will be the culmination of a week-long fundraising challenges. 25 years ago, Greentop established its circus centre in the former Saint Thomas’ Church in Brightside as part of a ‘Challenge Anneka’ BBC TV project. Between 9am and 9pm the Circusathon will involve Youth Circus members, celebrities and Greentop professionals in 25 different circus skills including trapeze, hoop and silks, unicycling, juggling, stilt-walking, acrobatics, diablo and tight-wire.

“Greentop is a special place which has touched the lives of so many people over the last 25 years,
and I sincerely hope it keeps serving the city of Sheffield and the North for another 25 years
– by improving people’s lives and reinvigorating communities through circus.”
– James Harkness, former Chair of Trustees and retired circus performer

Greentop is inviting anyone interested in helping young people get creatively active to ‘step into the ring’ and try one of the challenges at home visit http://www.greentop.org/greentop25 or to donate via www.justgiving.com/campaign/greentop25challenge.  There are challenges for all the family including balancing a feather on your nose for 25 seconds, balancing 25 objects on someone else, or stilt-walking 25 laps of your garden.
“I like the feeling of being part of a community full of inspiring people who are constantly encouraging
me to achieve as much as I can as well as learning new skills in a safe environment with people
that I enjoy learning with. For me, Greentop has been a place to have fun and make new friends.”
– Bo Clay, Youth Circus participant
Through its charitable, social circus activities, Greentop is empowering 1000s of young people to express their individuality, be creative, improve their fitness and have fun.  Circus activity improves young people’s resilience and self-belief, building confidence, creativity and trust. The Greentop25Challenge aims to raise at least £2,500 of funds to provide circus skills sessions for some of Sheffield’s most marginalized young people to support their physical, social and emotional wellbeing. This includes specialist programmes for neurodiverse children and young people from the local Roma community.
“A lady told me that when her foster son first came to live with her, he was so traumatised he didn’t speak
and he didn’t play. Gradually, through coming to the Youth Circus, he had started to play and then to speak. She told me that she thought Greentop gave all our children a voice. I realised then that Greentop gave everyone who came through the door a voice.”
– Caroline Veal, former Manager and fundraiser
