Circus North is a new Arts Council England funded initiative to develop Circus in the North. Circus North will deliver exciting projects to develop the quality of circus education in the North.
The aim of the Circus North project is to create a critical mass for the sector by developing Greentop as an educational hub. Through high quality training and educational opportunities, Circus North will provide the backbone of skills and artistic development required for Circus in the North to equal the UK’s south and mainland Europe, and enable Circus practitioners in the North of England to get onto the world stage.
Circus North will enable Greentop to act as a hub for circus and associated arts in the north and develop educational and artistic quality by
- Developing the quality of circus skills education,
- Developing the quality of youth circus education provision, and
- Developing artistic and creative development.
An exciting range of Circus North initiatives will be delivered by Greentop over three years:

Circus North- Developing the quality of circus skills education-
Circus North will enable Greentop to continue to work as part of CTAG, the national Circus Training Action Group, for example to develop a new Training for Trainers qualification for circus arts educators, develop quality standards for circus skills training, and co-hosting a national circus skills ‘open space’ event.
Circus North- Developing the quality of youth circus educational provision-
As part of Circus North, Greentop hosted the 2011 National Youth Circus Event in partnership with Swamp Circus and Circus Space, and as the Circus North project progresses it will provide high quality progression routes for Youth Circus members to enable them to extend their skill levels.
Circus North- Creative and artistic development-
A Circus North artistic development programme will increase the quality of and appreciation for circus arts. This will include a range of events, incubating and curating a programme of Circus North 'micro-festivals', Hot House, a scheme providing space and director time, and Transform, a programme of intensive masterclasses.
