Circus in Performance
Circus Skills Foundation Course - January to April 2009
Auditions Autumn 2008
Monday - Friday • 10am - 4pmA twelve week intensive adult course, helping artists to develop their existing skills and learn new skills. The course addresses all aspects of planning, producing, preparing and performing a successful show. It will be hard work but fun and participants will need to be dedicated, determined and willing to work with a group of other artists.
There are seven main areas of study which include the following skills:
- Manipulation - juggling, diablo, devil-stick, club-swinging
- Equilibristics - unicycle, stilts, walking-globe, tightwire
- Clowning - clowning and clown personae
- Movement Arts and Dance - contemporary and street dance, and movement for performance
- Aerial - static trapeze
- Acrobatics and Acrobalance - tumbling, hand balancing, pyramids
- Performance skills - energy, focus, improvisation, creating physical characters, chorus work
Each of these modules are taught by professional, practicing exponents of the art, many with national and international reputations. Throughout the course the emphasis is on presentation rather than demonstration and various techniques will be explored to encourage the unique performer within us all. In addition the course covers many areas involved in performing professionally such as First Aid, Child Protection, Health and safety and how to survive as a self-employed circus performer.
The Circus In Performance course is accredited through the National Open College Network with each learner's progress documented and evaluated in their own personal journal. All seven disciplines are taught to level 2 after which learners specialise in some skills that they wish to take to level 3.
Former Greentop learners have gone on to study at BTec and Degree level at Circomedia and Circus Space and perform at Glastonbury, Ibiza, the Millennium Dome and at festivals across the globe. All learners are given complementary membership of Greentop for one year, entitling them to discounted rates for most future events and workshops throughout 2009.
